Student Induction Programs foster student engagement and support their effective transitioning to collegiate education. Nallamuthu Gounder Mahalingam College, Pollachi conducted a Three Day Student Induction Program for the First year students of the College from 10th-12th August 2022. The program was organised and conducted by the Department of English. The induction programme activities included Keynote sessions, Institution orientation, and Mentoring. These activities were based on UGC’s guide to SIP, SAGE that covers different aspects of College life like Socializing, Associating, Governing and Experiencing.
Keynote address on “Laborious Today – Luminous Tomorrow” by Benson Thilagar Christadoss, Associate Professor & Head of the Department of English, St. John’s College, Palayankottai encouraged the students to develop their communicative skills and professional and ethical behavior during their years of graduation. A session by the Principal, Dr. R. Muthukumaran, familiarized the students with the academic support initiatives and various facilities and services available within the campus in the form of Extension Activities Clubs and Cells. His speech helped in enhancing student awareness and understanding of the key rules and responsibilities within the institution. He also highlighted positive social relationships, right attitude, team play and communication skills as vital for successful adjustment to college life. There was a motivational speech on the topic “Yethaiyum Sadhikka Mudiyum” delivered by the eminent speaker Dr. Kavidasan, Director, Roots Industries India Limited, Coimbatore. He identified hardwork, insight, task motivation and adaptability as critical success factors. He advised the students to grow by focussing on their strengths and exploiting the opportunities available everywhere.
The Heads of the various Departments of the College briefed on the different approaches to learning, to assist the students to cope with the demands of higher education environment. They also held interactive sessions to develop in the students a sense of ‘fit’ with their institution.
The Office of Controller of Examinations, IQAC and CDC acquainted the students with common University procedures, the teaching, learning and assessment styles that are different from their higher secondary schooling. Placement Cell and Academy for Professional Development emphasised the graduates’ acquisition of employability skills.
