One Day Workshop on writing for scholarly publication by Satyaraj Venkatesan, Associate Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences Trichy. Department of English and Research Committee (NGM) organized One – Day Workshop on Writing for Scholarly Publications on 06.03.2020 and the Resource Person was Dr. Sathyaraj Venkatesan, Associate Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, NIT, Trichy. The Department of English in association with Research Committee of the College organised and conducted a One-Day Workshop on “Writing for Scholarly Publications”. The purpose of this workshop was to impart Research scholars and professionals with basic skills in writing, identifying and publishing their research in the right journal. The Workshop had three sessions and the agenda began with the Welcome address delivered by the Head of the Department and the Convenor of the workshop Dr. S. Muthukumaravel.
The Presidential address was delivered by the Principal of the College, Dr. P. M. Palanisamy. He spoke on how research often turns into an obsession that helps the scholars to discover, grow and succeed through critical thinking. Dr. Sathyaraj Venkatesan, Associate Professor, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, NIT, Trichy was the Resource Person of the Day. The first half of the morning session was more of an ice-breaker that required the participants to introduce themselves and raise doubts relating to the publication of their research. Following a short quiz, the resource person started the presentation with an emphasis on the interdisciplinary nature of the 21 st century approach to research in Literature.
Discussions in the second session focused on how to spot the right journal, as publishing in the right journal increases the visibility of the research article. He enlightened the participants about the various types of scholarly writing and indexing databases like Web of Science and Scopus. In the afternoon session, he presented the case for authentic against predatory journals. He listed out the golden rules to be followed before submission of research article for publication. He quoted “Good research article is because we think more not because we read more”. He also covered topics such as types of peer review, types of review, thesis and dissertation databases and research article submission.
As a Senior International Bibliographer with the publications of Modern Language Association of America (PMLA), he was able to effectively guide the participants through documentation and bibliographic information of the research. The workshop came to an end with the Vote of Thanks proposed by the Organising Secretary, Dr. Suja Mathewws. Nearly 30 research scholars across various disciplines and 20 Faculty members from various colleges participated in the workshop. Workshop participants identified several key factors to
be taken into account while publishing their research including, effective literature search and
review, understanding authorship and plagiarism and authentic versus predatory journals.
They also took keen interest in the practical tasks intended to their understanding of the
central learning points. The sessions were interactive and the Resource Person answered the
queries raised by the participants.
